Ommy2019Bongo musician Ommy Dimpoz praises God in a new song after a year of hardships and illness.

Tanzanian musician was sick throughout 2018, he underwent three surgeries for a throat-related illness. The illness made him seek medical help in South Africa, Kenya, and even Germany. At one point, even Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho stepped up to help him out. His prognosis was not good and he had one week to live according to a hospital in Germany.

Now the bongo star Omary Nyembo aka Ommy Dimpoz is all better and he has released his first song since falling sick. The song titled “Ni Wewe” is a thank you message to his fans, friends, family, and God who healed him and kept him alive.

“Baba Ni We” is testimony after his year-long battle with a throat infection. The song that was released a day ago, is trending on YouTube in Kenya and has over 400,000 views already.

The “Baadae” singer’s health problems started with a throat surgery in South Africa in June 2018 and later hospitalization and another surgery in Germany in December. His vocal cords got damaged by infection and he had expressed uncertainty over his comeback in the music industry. He has since recovered and the latest hit proves his vocals have been restored to their original state.


cokestudioAfrica’s favorite music show, Coke Studio Africa is back! The launch of the most anticipated continental music show Coke Studio Africa 2019 happened last night (10.02.19) at the Sankara hotel in Nairobi and was well attended by Nairobi’s who’s who.

The star-studded premiere event was hosted by Capital FM’s Amina Abdi, Maqbul Mohammed and Dj Joe Mfalme on the decks. The show had past and present Kenyan Coke Studio Africa participants such as Hip hop first Lady Nazizi Hirji, fast-rising star Nadia, award-winning rapper Khaligraph Jones, 2 in 1 hitmaker Naiboi, breakout stars Ethic, gospel singer Moji ShortBaba,  girl group Band Beca and producers Majic Mike as well as Viola Karuri.

The 2019 season celebrates African music greatness with the different top African artists such as Nigeria’s Skales, Tanzania’s Nandy, Harmonize, Rayvanny, South Africa’s Boity and Nigeria’s Rudeboy just to name a few as well as song renditions and themes. The Coca Cola flagship also did not have an international megastar on the show for the first time since it’s inception and also worked with local Kenyan brands such as Pace Africa who design and manufacture an array of audio devices such as Pace focus and pace mate which powered up the sound for the season, clothing brand Home who provided branded clothing merchandise and Yallo leather by Mercy Kyallo, the sister to TV presenter Betty Kyallo.

TimayaNigerian singer Timaya is kicking off the new month with a new single called “Balance”.

Balance is the lead single off Timaya’s first project in 5 years, the Chulo Vibes EP. With consistent melodies, unique rhythm and catchy hooks, he asserts his stance as a certified hitmaker.

The video shows him living a life of balance in a lavish lifestyle. This video is coming a day after he showed his fans his three G-Wagons on his social media account. The track “Balance” is a classic Timaya feel-good song, made for every playlist, from traffic, club nights, radio and even family gatherings. The track was produced by a longtime ally, Orbeat and the video was directed by Unlimited LA. Timaya also known as Papichulo  took to the photo-sharing website Instagram, to share his excited over his first 2019 release.

The 38-year-old Nigerian singer and songwriter started his solo career in 2005. Known for hits such as “Bam Bam”, “Dance”, “Money”, and “Dem mama” Timaya whose real name is Enitimi Alfred Odom has consistently grown his brand with great hits. Timaya shut down Kenya in 2017 during the BBQ Live concert which he headlined.


sauti sol19Sauti Sol has partnered up with the original “Cash Madam” Vanessa Mdee for a new release dubbed “Kamasutra.” With the gentle strumming of an acoustic guitar, Chimano takes the lead in the first verse, fusing his harmonies with that of the Tanzanian beaut Mdee.  As the electric guitar is incorporated into the track, the Kenyan foursome delivers some clever Swahili lyrics overflowing with sexual innuendos reminiscent of Bongo music. Vanessa Mdee’s vocals are well-delivered, adding to the overall upbeat, sensual nature of the track.

“Kamasutra” is among the last few tracks released in the Sauti Sol much-awaited album ‘Afrikan Sauce’ which has been well-received so far. The album is available for streaming according to a recent post from one of Kenya’s most successful groups.

Termed as a “collaboration project” between Sauti Sol and various African acts, the album features some club bangers including “Melanin,” “Afrikan Star” featuring Burna Boy, “Girl Next Door” featuring Tiwa Savage, and a more recent release “Love on the Dance Floor” featuring Toofan.

The musical project has seen Sauti Sol earn millions of views on YouTube, and expand their sound, drawing inspiration from different sources across the continent. With the LP offering diverse sound, the four Sol members have something for everyone serving up benga, Naija and afro-pop all in one compilation.

“Afrikan Sauce” is a herculean effort on the part of Sauti Sol, and is a must-have for any self-respecting Kenyan musical enthusiast.


nikitakeringTwo upcoming Kenyan musicians have been selected for Mr. Eazi’s artist empowerment programme called emPawa 100.

The Kenyan two artists who will be joining 8 other musicians from different African countries for a masterclass organized by top Nigerian singer Mr. Eazi in Cape Town, South Africa next month are, Nikita Kering and Bey T.

The “London Town” hitmaker unveiled the mentorship programme for 100 artists in 6 African countries in Nairobi, in November 2018. The 27-year-old award-winning singer was also in Kenya at the time to promote his latest mixtape Life is Eazi – Vol 2: Lagos to London.

Nikita Kering is a budding 16-year-old singer who first came into the music scene in 2011 when she performed alongside gospel singer Emmy Kosgei during her album launch. In 2018, Kering released a single titled “Happy With You” which has garnered over 100,000 views on YouTube.

JIZEVeteran Tanzanian rapper Professor Jay has collaborated with Kenyan songstress in his first release of 2019 in a track dedicated to women.

The song simply called ‘Woman’ is a heartwarming song praising women, Mikumi MP Joseph Haule aka Professor Jay starts the song off with praises the woman in his life with riveting Swahili lyrics. He describes this woman as being listening, humble, patient and deserving of a 21 gun salute.

“Prokoto” singer Victoria Kimani posted on Instagram saying that her fans’ mothers would love this new song and that it is the perfect time as every time to appreciate, recognize and worship women because they do everything.

Kenya’s Victoria Kimani’s melodious vocals on the chorus give the song a sweet vibe. Her lyrics describe how a woman should be treated. “Respect the woman, protect your woman, better love your woman, where would I be without your love, thank God for you,” Kimani sings.

MDQ MDQ is joining a class of 20 change-makers from around the world to deliver a talk on the TED stage this April in Vancouver, Canada. The “Suzie Noma” hitmaker was selected for her work in developing the cultural landscape in East Africa through her barrier-breaking, genre-bending music. The Bongo Sawa proprietor is also known for changing consumption of music with alt music festivals Blankets & Wine and Africa Nouveau.

The elated rapper posted on social media that she was happy to be selected as a TED fellow and that “after 10 years in the music industry it is clear that the creative sector is a legit manufacturing industry in Africa.”

“We are thrilled to announce the newest class of TED Fellows, who give voice to some of the most exciting ideas we’ve seen in the program’s 10-year history,” said TED Fellows director Shoham Arad.

Founded in 2009, the TED Fellows program has 472 Fellows from 96 countries, whose talks have been viewed more than 250 million times overall.

Otile Brown 2019Another one for Kenyan girls by Badman Shivo, Otile Brown. Singer Otile Brown’s first release of the year is on fire. The song titled “Kenyan Girls” was released yesterday (21.01.19) and it is an ode to Kenyan girls whom Otile Brown says he loves.

On the Swahili melody, Otile mentions some notable Kenyan girls that he is appreciating. The long list of women includes his ex-girlfriend, Vera Sidika,  socialites Huddah Monroe and Amber Ray. Media personalities stars like Joey Muthengi, Betty Kyallo, Amina Abdi, Kalekye Mumo, Julie Gichuru, Caroline Mutoko, Lilian Muli and Lulu Hassan were also part of the serenade. Singers Akothee and Avril, politicians Rachel Shebesh and Charity Ngilu as well as Kenya’s First Lady Margaret Kenyatta also got an honorable mention on the track.

Shot on the streets of Nairobi, Otile is seen gifting random Kenyan women from all walks of life roses and taking selfies with them. Model Deliah Ipupa, celebrity make up artist Phoina Tosha and Television star Ella Wanjiru are seen lip-synching the lyrics to the song on the video.

The song has since garnered close to 100,000 in less than 24 hours since it’s release and it was trending YouTube video since its release.

The ‘Dangerous Woman’ hitmaker answered a series of questions from her fans during a brief Twitter Q&A on Monday (21.01.19), where she alluded to the fact her album, which is believed to be titled ‘Thank U, Next’, like the lead single – which name drops a number of the singer’s exes, including late rapper Mac Miller and ex-fiance Pete Davidson – would be with fans by the most romantic day of the year next month.

When one fan asked: “Hopefully it releases Feb so its the best birthday gift”, Ariana simply wrote back: “hbd” (happy birthday). Another then suggest: “is it Feb the 8th !!!!!!!! that’s my 21st sis”, to which she responded: “how convenient.”And when one fan joked: “Dropping the album before Valentine’s Day, you gon get everybody PREGNANT”, she laughed it off and wrote: “oh quite the opposite.”

morgan heritageAfter show-stopping performances in Zimbabwe on 21st Dec, Zambia on 24th Dec, Ghana on 28th Dec, Morgan Heritage – the GRAMMY-winning siblings and Royal Family of Reggae are in Kenya, as part of their announced 2019 “Africa Jamaica Tour” (#AJT2019) that will also see them perform in Ghana, Zanzibar, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe with more dates to be added.

Mojo Morgan spoke about the tour saying, “This Africa x Jamaica tour is the beginning of something great for us as a group and a family of African descent. For years our fans in Africa has been asking us to perform more because they only get to see us on video. So as we prepare to release our new album we will give them what they want as the great Burning Spear would say.”

Morgan Heritage were among headliners at Kenya’s Wasafi Festival held at Uhuru Garden on New Year’s Eve, where they put up a massive performance, serenading to their Kenyan fans some of their beloved Morgan Heritage tunes like "Nothing to smile about", "Down by the River" and "I'm coming home". They also performed their latest successful hit single "Africa X Jamaica" alongside Diamond Platnumz who is featured on the song. They later joined Diamond Platnumz on stage, during his set, and together they once again blessed the crowd with one of Africa’s biggest songs from 2017—their mega-hit "Hallelujah". It was the first time in Kenya and Africa for Morgan Heritage and Diamond to perform together.
